Improving Turnout Workshop
Turn your feet out… don’t let the arches roll in… pull the kneecaps up… wrap through the hip and thigh… tailbone heavy… drop the rib cage… open the collarbone… reach through the fingertips… lengthen the neck… lift the eyes...
These are all cues I’ve heard to simply STAND in first position. That’s a lot to remember and even harder to do. And don’t forget to maintain all of that while dancing. No one said dance is easy, but it doesn’t have to be so complicated either.
The turnout workshop will answer questions like:
As an adolescent dancer, I was motivated to improve my turnout and wanted to take control of my body and what it could do. So, I slept on my back in a butterfly position with the weight of the comforter pushing down – all night. I thought my muscles would relax as I slept, and that would result in better hip mobility and turnout. It didn’t improve my turnout, but it did result in hip, knee, and back pain.
Dancers…
Are you confused trying to apply all of the cues your teacher is giving you for turnout?
What if you could improve your turnout AND arabesque using the same simple cue?
Parents…
Are you not sure where to even begin when it comes to understanding turnout but know it’s important to your dancer so it’s important to you?
How would it feel to support your dancer in their quest for better turnout – without having to understand it?
The goal of the workshop is to take you from confused but dedicated to confident and accomplished.
Dancers will walk away with a better understanding of what is limiting their turnout range or ability to maintain their turnout while dancing and to “find” the correct turnout muscles.
Parents/guardians of minor-age dancers are encouraged to be present for the entire workshop and are STRONGLY encouraged to attend the last 15 minutes of the workshop for the Q&A section. Please note – unfortunately chairs will not be available, but there will be plenty of standing/sitting space around the edges of the room.

The turnout workshop will answer questions like:
- How can I get my feet into 180 degrees of turnout?
- Why can’t I “stand up straight” in turned out positions?
- I keep gripping my butt… why isn’t my turnout better?
- Why do I lose turnout when standing on one leg?

Hi there! I am Dr. Meghan Gearhart and I own Head2Toe Physical Therapy, Dance Medicine & Performance.
I have the privilege of providing youth and adolescent dancers the specialized support they deserve while recovering from injuries and improving their performance - while providing answers and direction for dance parents trying to navigate the delicate balance between their child's happiness and long-term health. I am so excited to offer the Dancer Wellness Workshop Series this summer! It's a great opportunity for your dancer to learn how to level up their performance without overloading themselves with another dance class, and gives you the opportunity to connect with someone who can answer those burning questions that you've had all year but weren't sure who to ask. I can't wait to work with you and your dancer ❤ |
